This part of our farm is about you and it is the most meaningful part of our work as farmers.  We get excited about helping people make good food choices because the positive impacts extend far beyond the dinner table.  When you eat fresh sustainably grown food, you improve your own health and the health of your community.  Sometimes, we just need a little encouragement to head down the right path.  Our memberships offer just that with regular deliveries of fresh produce and accompanying recipes to support you all summer long.

How do memberships work?

Members commit to the farm at the start of the year and receive 15 weekly deliveries of fresh local produce during the summer.  This partnership benefits the farm and its members.  As a member, you benefit from receiving super fresh, organically grown food that is conveniently delivered to your door (for those within our delivery area), and as farmers, we appreciate being able to minimize waste and maximize efficiency thanks to the secured market for the food we grow.

Above is an example of one week of the 2015 Standard Share. The 2016 Standard Share will be slightly larger.

Price: $ 375

Are you new to vegetables or too busy to cook?  A Starter Kit membership might be a good place to begin.  This membership focuses on crops that are very familiar and easy to prepare such as salad mix, carrots, tomatoes, and cucumbers. With a little less variety and very manageable quantities, we hope this membership will help you make a smooth transition into the wonderful world of fresh local food!

This membership includes:

  • 15 weekly deliveries of $25 value from July to the start of October.

  • 4-7 farmer selected products each week

  • 1 optional vacation week

  • Crop selection limited to our 15 most familiar crops.

Price: $ 525

Standard Share members are the backbone of our farm, so we make it our priority to fill their boxes with the best variety of produce our fields have to offer.  The weekly recipes we provide for our members will be based on the contents of this box. Standard Share members can expect a healthy dose of our most popular crops with a sprinking of fresh herbs and more unique greens to add some flare and flavour to their menu.

This membership includes:

  • 15 weekly deliveries of $35 value from July to the start of October.

  • 6-9 farmer selected products each week

  • 1 optional vacation week

  • Crop selection includes all 30 of our farm crops.

Price: $ 675

Backyard Bounty members enjoy the same diversity of products offered in the Standard Share AND additional bulk items.  These memberships are appropriate for larger families, veggie lovers, juicing, and even some preserving.  In exchange for your willingness to share in the farm's bounty, we have discounted this share by 10%.  For an initial investment of $675, you will receive $750 of food throughout the season.

This membership includes:

  • 15 weekly deliveries of $50 value from July to the start of October.

  • All Standard Share products plus additional bulk items that will vary each week.

  • 1 optional vacation week

  • Crop selection includes all 30 of our farm crops.

After studying the results from the end of season survey this year, we have made some changes to the membership options for 2016. The most popular Standard Share is back with the same quality and variety but with now with a slightly larger weekly value of $35 as requested.  We noticed a small group of people were happy with just the basic veggies and in smaller quanitites and for this we created the Starter Kit.  Lastly, for the larger families and keen locavores, we have revised the Backyard Bounty membership to include one or two bulk items each week and have also discounted this membership price by taking 10% off of the actual value to make it the most economical choice.

1 Vacation Week for All Members

We are experimenting with a vacation week option for all members in 2016 which will give you the chance to take a week off from your deilvery or pick up at any point in the season as long as you inform us of this at least 1 week in advance.  If you choose to take advantage of this option, we will add one additional delivery / pick-up to the end of your schedule so you still receive the same value of food for the season.

Mini Market for Pick-Up Members

We were impressed by all of our pick-up members last year who commited to coming out each Wednesday from all areas of the city to pick up their box of produce.  To show our appreciation for your commitment to the farm, we want to add a perk for you in 2016.  Each Wednesday evening, we will set up a mini market here at our home which will allow you to trade items in your share and/or purchase additional items to bring home.  This will give you the opportunity to customize your share a bit more to match the unique preferences of your household.

Membership Deadline and Payment

The last day to sign up for a membership is March 31.  The number of memberships we can offer is limited by the amount of work we are able to do and the amount of land we have available.  Therefore, there are only a limited number available and they will be sold on a first come first served basis.  Members from 2015 can hold their spot for 2016 with a $50 non-refundable deposit with the remainder of their payment due March 31, 2016.  If the remaining balance is not paid by this date, the membership will be made available to the public.  New members can claim a spot of their own when they sign up and pay for their membership in full.  All membership payments are non-refundable.

The produce from Chain Reaction Urban Farm was beautiful, varied, and delicious.  I was amazed each week by the flavour and enjoyed the meals it inspired me to make.  Knowing the food was grown locally in a sustainable way by caring farmers gave it a story that I savoured.  I also enjoyed the entertaining farm updates, delivery summaries, and recipes bundled together in each weekly e-mail. Thank you Jared and Rachel!

Being a member of Chain Reaction Farms was an easy decision for our family.  The convenience of having the food delivered to our door was the icing on the cake.  Our family of 5 enjoyed fresh produce all summer, and when something unique was in the food box there was a recipe for it in my email.  Jared and Rachel made it easy to be a member, and we always looked forward to our weekly deliveries.

I have been a part of CSAs in the past, Chain Reaction's produce is consistently of high quality and clean.  Jared and Rachel take care not to overwhelm members with strange foods or over-abundant quantities.  In the past, I have composted some of my share.  This year I was able to use the food I received in a timely fashion.  If you have never tried a CSA, Chain Reaction is the perfect place to start.

Where do we deliver?

We are committed to doing all of our farm work by bike and believe in supporting our local community first so our delivery area is currently limited to the core areas of Nutana, Buena Vista, Riversdale, King George, and Holiday Park. Here is a MAP of our delivery area.  If you live outside of this area, don't count yourself out!  We also have a limited number of pick-up memberships available.

When are shares delivered / picked-up?

We deliver your produce every Wednesday evening between the hours of 6:00pm and 9:00pm from the start of July to early October. These hours may shift a little earlier as the days shorten in late September and October.  Members picking up their share can do so during the same time period from our home base in Riversdale.

Do I get my own box?

You sure do!  When you join our farm, we will build you a custom wood box that you'll be happy to leave on your front porch.  This box will stay at your house or ours for the season and we will just keep refilling it with your weekly share of the harvest.

What happens if I need to miss a week?

You have two options. If you notify us at least 1 week in advance, we will cancel your box for the week you are away and add one more week to the end of your season.  All members can take 1 of these vacation weeks per season if they choose.  A fun alternative to this is to share your box with a friend or neighbour.  We can even deliver to a different household for you as long as they are within our delivery area.  This is a great way to spread a little joy in the world!

How much food will I receive?

We plan carefully for the growing season accounting for crop life cycles, planting densities, and expected yields, but we do not know what nature has in store for us each year.  Therefore, we cannot garrantee the exact quantity you will receive of each crop.  What we can promise is that we will honour the initial investment each member has made in our farm by returning to them that same value in produce.  That means if you invest in a Standard Share for $525, you are guarranteed $525 of farm produce.  As insurance, we plant a little extra of each crop so in the case that one crop does not perform as expected, we can increase the amount we deliver of another better performing crop.  We recognize that this model of agriculture requires some flexibility for all of us, but with this type of cooperation, we can create a more sustainable food system that results in stronger relationships, a vibrant local economy, and healthier people.

What will an average box look like?

The box contents will vary throughout the season, but we aim to keep the quantity of food consistent so you are not overwhelmed with too much food one week and lacking food another week.   The quantities in one Standard Share should be easily managed by one or two adults who eat vegetables regularly and we will support you with weekly recipes that will incorporate multiple items from the box.  Below are some examples of the Standard Share box contents from 2015.  Last year this was a $25 box, but this year's Standard Share will be a little larger at $35 per week.  We define the value of each item in the box in our member newsletter each week during the harvest season.  If you are curious about the specific varieties of crops we have planned, visit our Products page to see what's in store for 2016.
